Don’t Be Afraid To Dream Big
August 5, 2008
Anyone who ever achieved anything noteworthy started with the seed of an idea. What makes them different from the vast majority of people is that they took the dream and took steps to make it into a reality. Do you let your imagination go when you try to picture what you want, or do you hold yourself back?
Too many of us put a filter on our own imaginations, when we really shouldn’t. Maybe we feel unworthy or we don’t see how we could ever achieve what we want. Your imagination isn’t to be used for this purpose. Instead, it is supposed to be a safe place where you can try on any kind of role you want. If you don’t like what you see, then change your mind and picture something else.
Your Imagination as a Tool to Success
If the idea of using your imagination as a tool to achieve your goals seems a bit childish, then maybe using a different word, like visualization, may help the process seem a bit more grown up to you. Here’s how it works:
You picture what it is that you want in as much detail as you can. So, if your goal is to become the next Steve Nash, take some time to think about what that would be like. How would you feel training to reach that level? What will stepping out onto the basketball court for your first big game feel like? Exactly how sweet will victory be when you and your team win big?
Take Action to Make Your Dreams a Reality
Now start doing the work to get ready for your anticipated success. The difference between a dream and a goal is that a goal has a plan for making it into a reality. Just as you won’t walk onto the court in the NBA without doing some work first, you need to get to work on the steps involved in achieving what you have set out to do.
It helps to have a plan, whether you are launching your own business, looking at career options other than becoming a professional athlete, or trying to lose those last 10 pounds. Make a list of the steps involved and break them down into small, manageable units. Keep track of your progress on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis. Once you start to see that you are making progress, you can’t help but be encouraged to continue on.
When you are having a day when you are feeling discouraged, pull out your plan and remind yourself of how far you have come. Even world class athletes and captains of industry have times where they lose their focus. They have learned how to refocus their attention on their ultimate goal and to continue on.
Just in case you ever think that you can’t achieve great things in whatever area of endeavor you are considering, why not put yourself in the mindset that you can do well, because you have already pictured it in your imagination!
